October 15, 2026
From October through mid-December, the Saenger Theater's calendar is mostly bands, comedians, and productions coming through on tour. On Friday, November 20, the bill is different. It's the inaugural Hattiesburg Music Showcase, and every act on it is a Hattiesburg-area band chosen through public nominations in a single summer week. The format makes downtown part of the evening. Each band plays a 45-minute set, and between sets the crowd can step outside to a street party with food and beverages.
The Historic Saenger Theater announced the showcase on July 27, 2026, and the selection process was simple. Fans commented with their favorite local band on the theater's official nomination post on Facebook or Instagram. The window ran from July 27 through July 31, 2026. The four chosen acts were revealed one at a time starting August 5, and tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. on August 14 for $25, $35, or $45 plus taxes and fees. The Hattiesburg American also covered the nomination call the day it opened.
The theater says hundreds of community nominations came in during those five days. It describes the showcase as a way to give local musicians a premier chance on the Saenger stage while recognizing the city's long history of producing musicians. VisitHBURG's event listing uses the same framing.
The lineup that came out of those nominations covers roughly three decades of Hattiesburg music. The newest band formed in 2020. The closing band formed in 1993 and is getting back together just for this show.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the first band starts at 6:30. Sets start on the half hour and run 45 minutes each, which leaves about 15 minutes between bands for the street party outside. If the schedule holds, the last set ends around 10:15 p.m.
Drew Young opens the night with a mix of Americana, country, folk, and rock and roll. The Saenger notes that the Hattiesburg songwriter has more than 90 published songs and more than six million streams worldwide. With doors an hour ahead of the first set, there's time to find your seats before he starts.
This is the youngest band on the bill. It formed in Hattiesburg in 2020 and draws on old-school country, rock and roll, and Red Dirt country. Their full-length album, Empty Bottles, came out in 2022.
Grits & Greens describe their sound as "psychedelic y'alternative," mixing Southern rock, progressive rock, punk, soul, and funk. The Hattiesburg band recently recorded new music at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
The Saenger saved the oldest band for last. Blue Mountain, led by Hattiesburg's own Cary Hudson and Laurie Stirratt, formed in 1993. The theater credits the band with helping make Mississippi a major force in alternative-country and roots-rock. WJTV reported on August 12 that Blue Mountain was the last act announced. According to both the Saenger and VisitHBURG, the band is reuniting especially for this showcase.
So the bill runs from a 2020 band through a working songwriter and a band fresh from Muscle Shoals to a 1993 group back together for one night. Every act on it was nominated by the public.
Looking at the rest of the theater's calendar shows what's unusual about November 20. Here's the Saenger's schedule from today, October 9, through mid-December, as posted on the theater's website:
| Date | Show | Showtime |

| Fri., Oct. 9 | Rumours ATL: A Fleetwood Mac Tribute | 7:30 p.m. |

| Fri., Oct. 23 | Rocky Horror Picture Show featuring Hattiesburlesque | 8 p.m. |
| Sun., Oct. 25 | The Robert Cray Band: All Amped Up Tour | 7:30 p.m. |
| Sat., Nov. 7 | Larry Fleet: From A Barstool Tour | 7 p.m. |
| Sun., Nov. 8 | Daniel in the Lions' Den & Esther: The Bravest Queen | 2 p.m. |

| Thu., Dec. 10 | A Celtic Christmas | 7:30 p.m. |
| Fri., Dec. 11 | Rocky Mountain High Experience: A John Denver Christmas | 7:30 p.m. |
Most of these are touring productions. Robert Cray brings more than 50 years of blues and soul, and Zach Williams' Revival Nights tour covers 21 cities. The October 23 Rocky Horror night does have local talent. Hattiesburlesque performs a pre-show, and the screening includes a live shadow cast, a costume contest, and the theater's take-home "Blood Bag" drink. Still, November 20 is the only night this fall where a full evening of live music belongs entirely to local acts.
The Saenger sits at 201 Forrest Street. Because of the street party, a lot of the evening happens outside. With 15-minute breaks, any real dinner or drink plan belongs before the 5:30 doors or after Blue Mountain finishes. These downtown spots are within walking distance, grouped by street from the Downtown Hattiesburg directory and VisitHBURG listings:
Pine Street
Front Street
Mobile Street
McLeod and Main
One more Front Street name to keep in mind is Wax Fantastic at 140 East Front Street. As of the Downtown Hattiesburg directory's August update, it was still listed as "Coming Soon," so it isn't a plan for showcase night yet. These directories confirm the places are there but don't list their hours for November 20. Check with each one before you build your evening around it, especially for the late slot after the last set.
Tickets have been on sale since August 14 at the three price levels, through the links on the Saenger's website. The theater's listing for the showcase hasn't said whether this will become a yearly event. For now, it's a one-night bill picked by Hattiesburg, with a 1993 band closing out a lineup that starts with musicians still building their catalogs.
If the older homes and storefronts a few blocks from the Saenger catch your eye, I'd love to hear which ones did. I grew up here and have a soft spot for Hattiesburg's old buildings, and helping people find a place close to nights like this one is my favorite part of the work.
